What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric_Oxygen_Therapy_Tampa_Florida I’ve been providing hyperbaric oxygen therapy for patients with various neurological disorders and chronic pain injuries for the past 8 years.  Although hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not new, it’s only recently that physicians and patients are increasingly turning to it for help with chronic degenerative health issues related to poor blood flow and oxygen delivery within the body.  I thought it would be helpful to kick off the new blog with a post on what hyperbaric oxygen therapy is and the benefits of such therapy.

What is Hypebaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment that provides 100 percent oxygen at higher than normal air pressure.  At this higher pressure, patients’ lungs are able to absorb much more oxygen than they can breathing pure oxygen at normal pressure.  That increased oxygen is circulated throughout the body via the bloodstream.  And since injured tissues need a lot of oxygen to function, those higher levels of oxygen promote healing and help fight off infection.

How is the treatment administered at the National Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center?
Patients are administered the treatments in sealed glass chambers.  Each treatment lasts about 90 minutes.  While inside the chambers, patients can watch TV, listen to music or relax.

What Are Some of the Benefits of HBOT?
1.  Increases oxygen flow to tissues
2.  Encourages growth of new blood vessels in areas of the body that have poor circulation
3.  Improves blood flow to organs.
4.  Encourages production of superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant that helps decrease inflammation and reduce free radicals in cells
5.  Helps heal infections, due to an increase in white blood cell activity

Who Uses This Type of Therapy?
HBOT is used to treat a variety of medical conditions.  In our practice, we have provided a great deal of treatment for those suffering from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and other neurological disorders, injuries after radiation therapy, health impacts related to diabetes, and complications from traumatic injuries.  HBOT offers a non-invasive, safe and cost effective alternative or supplement to prescribed pain relief medication therapy.
